Artist's Comments

On the ground as protesters entered Waterfront Park in downtown Portland was a very large cache of signs to choose from if you were unable to make your own. This young lady however created her very own purple, pink and yellow "Get Rid of Bush" sign that blew away any of the mass produced "Stop Torture" or Bring the Troops Home Now" signs. She even colored in little symbols for "No War" and "Peace on Earth" It would be great if everyone made their own signs, it adds a personal touch.

A beautiful capture of the moment. I would have maybe liked a smaller F value, thus adding to the DOF, especially as the photo is in B&W. You are absolutely right about the "signs"... sadly I think that such innocence is usually lost as we grow old. In part, due to things like war. Compliments on the photo! :)

Very cool! I almost went to San Fran for the anti-war protest March 19th... It was however a little too far for me :(

Thank you so much… Unfortunately you are correct that a wider aperture would have made this photo so much better. That guy on the left side of the photo should not have so much focus. I once saw a documentary about James Nachtwey and he would change aperture for every shot depending on what DOF he wanted and he would shoot fast too! I can’t wait till I am that good ;)

:) It will become a reflex soon: just try to figure how that is done in your cam (i used a Canon 10D the other day, but from that one time, I could not descipher how to change aperture, so maybe it is not so straight forward on the Nikon!) and you'll see that soon enough you'll be checking aperture and speed instantly to get the desired results! Best of success! :)
