Artist's Comments

When I arrived at the main stage area of the protest in DC I ran into a guy I have photographed with in Ft. Lauderdale at the Organization of American States protest. He brought me over to the media booth and hooked me up with some media and stage passes. I then went to the media stage but realized I was missing some of the crowed shots I was really looking for, more specifically shots of children holding signs or just playing amongst all the fever of this very large protest. I wondered the crowed for a bit when I ran into these children playing with their parents signs. I shot about 20 photographs of them and again the first one I shot is my favorite of the bunch.

When: September 24th 2005
Where: Washington DC
What: The United for Peace and Justice Anti-War protest & march

what a powerful image.

I remember walking on the sidewalk by the march and I came across these two little kids. the little girl was dressed as the statue of liberty holding a rifle, and the boy as the grim reaper. It was kinda sad, their parents weren't even with them. The whole thing came across as really staged but powerful at the same time. More powerful though, to see the parents subject their kids to all of this when they nothing of what is going on. It was shocking.

Yes! I saw that too.... I thought it was awesome... they were in such a large crowed that I could not get a good shot of them (especially her). Did you get a shot of her at all?

I believe what the parents are doing is teaching their children their beliefs... it is the same as taking your child to Sunday school really, In fact Sunday school was more scary then any protest I went to as a kid.

You really have to understand how much these people disapprove of the war and war in general. 18 year olds are still children in the eyes of their parents and they are being sent off to die in a war that most do not believe in and will only create a negative difference in the world.

I believe these children actually had a good time. It is the shock of seeing a child portrayed in such a way that makes us adults uneasy and that is good. We really need to think deeper and imagine more possibilities for our children and the world we live in. War should never be an answer.

I hope that one day soon we look back on these times as the days we were barbarians and strive to never stoop so low again.

Thank you so much Pia :) I realize how powerful the impact of seeing children in these type situations is and seek them out. It really is the wake-up call some people need to see who is next in line to be killed in these wars we wage for $$$$. I really hope people get it.

I know you do:heart:
